The two terms in the title appear to be related and they are. But I believe professionals should not mix the two since web design in itself is a vast fields as is search engine optimization.
It will take a life time to master either field be search engine optimization or web design. However great deal of web design knowledge is essential to on page optimization. The very reason I am attending web design classes albeit short duration. I have been into web page desiging since a long time but my knowledge in certain editing software and scripting languages needed to be enhanced.
Similarly understanding of basic Seo helps a lot when youdesign as website . In this case you reduce the burden or making changes as per the Seo. You reduce the work load as well.
both disciplines consume a lot of time hence until unless you run a web design or search engine optimization company with available IT experts you should concentrate only on one discipline. This advice is most suited to freelancers.

There's not that much to know about on-page SEO, designing with SEO in mind is in my opinion crucial for freelancers.
I had to work on optimising a design done fully in dreamweaver where every header was a span, where images were used for layout etc, now that's a design that doesn't take SEO under consideration.
Try to get a SEO specialist to do on-page SEO on a website like this, you'll pay as much as you paid for designing it, cause everything will need to be fixed.Posted 1st February 2009 at 03:04 PM by Sunlust

i agree, its hard to not become obsessed with knowing all there is to know and ending up doing a little bit of everything, but if you spread yourself thinly your unable to perfect either one by trying to design and do seo, although the pair do in part go hand in hand, a well designed web page needs to have the basic seo rules applied, but useful advice nonethelessPosted 7th February 2009 at 11:40 AM by bonnit
