Google Wave Review

Over the past 3 or 4 months, Google wave has been up and running to those that received an invitation, for those that were lucky enough to have gained access into it they would have found a while host of useful tools and great new inspirational software abilities.
Google wave has been about for a very short time and is in its infancy, but what I saw when I finally got into this much sought after piece of software was very disappointing.
Although the site itself was buggy and half the features were not working yet, I had high hopes for the possibilities this new instant form of chat can have.
At the point I was given an invite I shot straight over to try it out, I sent my allocated 10 email invites out so I would meet and great friends and colleagues for what could be the new revolution in live chat, of which half accepted the offer and I also added a couple that I knew already had access to my account. I eagerly awaited my first google wave conversation, which come about 2 days later, it simply said hi - so i replied to kick off a conversation.... no reply even after 2 weeks ..... I tried again, this time I sent someone else a message to chat ( they were registering as 'online' at the time ) - and the conversation started, being that it is not officially open I expected it to be slightly slower than I had been originally led to believe .. and it was ...
We tried every little available feature, it was fun, and some of the bugs were again 'expected'... sweet ... and that was that.
3 months on, not a single other conversation out of the dozen users I have on my friends list, I suppose its simpler just to open messenger as that is what I do too, I have chatted to all these friends on more than one occasion on messenger, but google wave just has not cut the mustard as no friends are ever at google wave when I am.
Was google wave a fad ?.. Is it something that is a toy or a tool ?.. I think that when you sign up its a toy, it has the potential to be a tool but right at this point I think google need some serious reasons why I should use this rather than any instant chat system I could install on my pc.

Yup, I agree with you. IMO, wave is a gr8 tool, but then it lacks the simplicity. For me it was quite confusing, like "create wave" compared to Twitter "create tweets" method!! Comparing it with Facebook and Twitter I really think that it lacks in simplicity. I also have my own review here Wave

First of all, Wave is not meant to be IM, so you can't really compare the two.
I think the true potential of Wave lies in multi-person communication. I'm sure we've all experienced the chaos and miscommunication that happens when more than two people are involved in an email conversation. Google Wave fixes all of that. It would be great for projects where you have to deal with multiple third parties or more than one person within the company.
Honestly, I think it will catch on, if slowly. However, first they need to have a feature to turn off the live typing. I'd like to be able to draft a message before I send it.Posted 24th January 2010 at 04:58 PM by CloudedVision
