web design, world away from the possibilities

As I hunt the internet more and more I am left wondering where this will all lead, is there a limit to the technology we have come to know as the internet ?
All the time there are new features and new ideas on how we can use it, I will be honest and say I am expecting big things, for example: have you ever thought of the possibility of wiring your computer to your household electronic items ? would this stretch as far as forgetting to switch of your lights in the house and just grabbing your mobile phone to switch them off ?...
To be honest, we are not that far off that type of thing, as all it would take is a central computer to control every built in electronic item in the house.. As some of you might be aware, you can control your pc without being there, and without using any websites or pc's.. If you had a mobile phone that had email, you can send a message to your pc with a specific title and use something like outlook to create a rule that if a message arrives with that title to run a command on your pc, simple really.. you can turn it off, run a scan, run any programme really.
So imagine the possibilities if that was connected to your household equipment, I mean obviously there are serious security issues that would have to be addressed but that is just cosmetics in comparison to the actual events taking place without your need to be at home.
So going by that logic, if that were possible, how far could we take the internet ? Would there one day be a website that you can log into and do everything you wanted.. like put on the kettle 5 minutes before you arrive home ?..
how far do you think we can go before the world of internet becomes a central thing in everybody's life, and even then how far will we allow it to take us, is there a limit ?..
Questions, Questions, Questions.. I dont suppose anyone would know the answers just yet, but I do know that web developers have only scratched the surface of what might be possible.

Actually, quite of few newer homes are controlled by a central computer. My Uncle's house in California is all hooked up to a server in a closet somewhere.
Personally, I think that the internet will eventually evolve into a partially stated protocol, as opposed to the stateless one it is now, which will bring about some exciting new possibilities.Posted 7th March 2010 at 11:06 PM by CloudedVision

I agree Theron, in order to make giant leaps there needs to be some sort of ground rules in place so that everyone is one the same wavelength and pulling in the same direction.
In terms of home applications, I saw a barcode reader built into a fridge the other day. The idea being that as you run out of items you scan them in. The system then automatically adds them to your favoured online shopping list, i.e. Tesco (other shops available) and then you can just add your luxury items and click "order".Posted 8th March 2010 at 04:00 PM by WelshStew
