Default You're probably right.

I do this all the time and hardly ever get this sort of issue, I honestly hate attributes like 'absolute' and 'relative', I have only ever found they cause issues that are harder to fix, 'relative' being the worst offender.

of course they have their place and of course you are using them as rightly you should if thats your choice, its just a suggestion based on previous experience.
I wish I had caught this BEFORE I'd finished the site... Seems time-consuming for a browser that is used by less than 20% of viewers. Do you think that's my only choice at this point?

Gotta quick fix for the peekaboo bug on my navbar up top?

I dont think its your only choice but I do think it will take someone with experience in using 'relatives' and 'absolutes' throughout their coding to be able to fix it, and i am sorry to say i dont have that type of experience.

for the bug, try the haslayout solution http://www.satzansatz.de/cssd/onhavinglayout.html

Default I have less experience than you do.

It's always a guessing game for me between relative, fixed, inherit, etc.

Thanks for trying. It was nice to meet you! I'll be back...

It may be a generalisation on my part, but try the following in the css of your problem div
Code:
zoom:1;

hello, again

have finally figured out my ie6 problems (if only all problems were resolvable in this way.)

1. What I failed to tell you was that I was viewing the site on my Acer web book with a resolution of 1024x600, so we were not seeing the same thing. Once I plugged the Acer into my 1600x1200 ViewSonic things became much clearer. My images didn't drop down to the bottom of the page any more. Everything you said, saltedm8, made sense.

2. Re: peekaboo bug, my fatal flaw was this:

<div id="navbar">
<ul id="main_nav">

in the stylesheet the id I used was .twoColLiqLtHdr #navbar. When I renamed the id .twoColLiqLtHdr #main_nav the nav no longer disappeared in ie6 and worked like a charm on all platforms in all browsers -- with just a few normal tweaks for ie6 regarding margins.

Dare I say my site is finished. Thanks for all your help!

no, but since you bought it up transitional is not meant to be used on new websites, you should be using strict html or strict xhtml

the following pages are invalid ( missing alt tags - nothing to do with the doctype )

arnot..interactive : guy lawson
arnot..interactive : ADR.com 2
arnot..interactive : citibank top holders
arnot..interactive : NYSEnet
arnot..interactive : tse
arnot..interactive : first call events
arnot..interactive : tfprn
arnot..interactive : adrINSITE
arnot..interactive : carson biotech
arnot..interactive : intangibles iq
arnot..interactive : active roadshow
arnot..interactive : ibm s390 execclub
arnot..interactive : capezzana
arnot..interactive : newsweek
arnot..interactive : intelisys

( its about accessibility )

check this out too Strict and Transitional Doctype Differences
