Thread: Flash player is not running photos
Flash player is not running photos 30 Jan 2010 @ 06.40
Okay, I've stared at these pages as long as I can take. My flash photo script was working for a long time. All of sudden it quit. I have not even touched the website and the thing quits working. Looking over everything that I can understand things seem to be the same. I cannot find anything wrong so I do not know what has happened to make the script stop working. Can anyone else tell from this?

I have removed the flash player. I'm sick of flash because I have too many problems with it.
Made a video of my photos but it's nearly 30 minutes long so now I cannot upload it to a free video upload site. Tried to upload it to my own domain but the file is so huge so I gave up. I just do not know what to do. Any new suggestions?

sorry that you did not get any help for this, but the only suggestions I can think of to reduce the video size is the following
1. Reduce the resolution. 2. Reduce the frame rate. 3. Increase the key frame rate 4. Change the compressor.

After doing more research on this it appears to me that there was nothing wrong with the flash player or script that I was using. The problem may be that access to my photos were being denied. I think this is possible because in my searching for a new script I have found only one which can access my photos from flickr and I cannot understand how to find the entire script for that one. I had to request an API key from flickr and now that I have it, I still do not know if it will be of any use to me.

I just found this page which tells exactly what I want to do but I have a question.
Build a Photo Gallery Using CakePHP and Flickr

With CakePHP installed, you'll need to create a phpflickr folder at /app/vendors/phpflickr/ and drop phpFlickr into it. Next, place the Flickr Component into the /app/controllers/components/ folder. [unquote]
What is "cake php"? How is that different from just plain "php"?
And, I am confused about the folders. I need to create these folders on my server, right?
So "app," "vendors," and "phpflickr" are separate folders? And I need to create two folders called "phpflickr"?
I am confused about the "/app/vendors/phpflickr/" ... I do not understand how I create that.

Cake PHP is a framework. It uses proprietary commands that 'map' to php commands, the idea being it makes it easier to write functions etc. It follows the principles of MVC - or Model, Controller and View classes. How it works, in a nutshell, a request is sent to the server from a browser, the request is dealt with by a controller that requests the relevant model from the database (think predefined queries), the data is then sent to a View, i.e. a predefined template for the data to be presented such as an html page. To be honest with you, its not worth trying to learn till you have learnt a reasonable understanding of standard php.
Just to say, if you do stick with a video, you want to reduce the key frame rate, not raise it, although the rate you set will be dependant on the frame rate. A key frame in video compression is pretty much a fully stored frame with minimal compression. Therefore the more key frames the more uncompressed, or less compressed, frames you'll have vastly increasing the file size. With a video of still images, assuming you have a basic transition between images, you could probably get away with as low as 8 fps (maybe a little lower). Ideally you want one keyframe per image. With a decent codec though, just sticking to automatic placement of keyframes should suffice. As a rough guide then, if you have 10 images and each image is to be displayed for 10 seconds and the framerate is 8fps each image will occupy 80 frames. I tend to use QuickTime H.264 and in the options I can specify a keyframe every X frames - in the example you'd set that to 1 keyframe every 80 frames. The thing with compression is its all trial and error. What works for one movie might not work for another. You might also try reducing the colour depth.
I do think you're better off trying to find a flash image gallery that works - perhaps if you posted the fla that seems to have ceased working someone can have a look and help to fix it.

Well, Frinky, I would love to do this, a non-flash script using all css......... Non Flash Photographer Website Design but apparently the script for this is not free. Plus, if I used all css, then I would probably have to load all those photos into my domain? Or could I still use them via flickr with my api key?

Some of these I found previously in my searches too but you also found some that I did not.
Any of the full-size pictures on this page are nice. The one that looks like a stack of photos is attractive for the project I'm doing. I clicked on that link though and the message "page not found" came up.
I also like the one with the "grass" on this page. This is the one I originally tried to work with. Downloaded the files and could not figure it out.

Now the one at flickrslidr.com was simple enough for me to figure out BUT I do not like how it only shows a portion of the photos and then ask if you want to see more. I prefer to set the player to run all the photos I have in a particular "set" and then have them play automatically. Thumbnails beneath the large photo does not matter one way or the other.
I am confused about the use of this api key now. If I really do not need it then maybe I should cancel it?
