Question Bad image quality with my animated gif 11 Mar 2010 @ 17.25

    Hi guys,

I need some help with creating an animated .gif. Well, not so much the creating, I've done that. The problem is with the image quality. They are .jpgs I've copied into photoshop. Then what I've done is set up my animation and saved the whole thing as a .gif. They images look a bit graining and distorted. Is there an easy way around this?

Sorry for the delay aazad - completely missed this.

Gif's are comprised of 256 colours maximum, so unles you've created your original artwork with this in mind you will have some issues.

A couple of things you can try:

    1. try different palette options (perceptive, selective, adaptive) - these determine what colours to store from the original. Shades between these colours will be dithered.

    2. Adjust the strength of the dither: 100% may be too much - start from 0 (where you'll see banding in the colours) and move up till you have an acceptable balance between banding and grain.

    3. Use flash

If we could see the original and the resultant gif, might be able to be more specific.

You could also use a jQuery image rotator if you don't have Flash. Here's a couple that look interesting:

Thanks guys for your help. Completely forgot to get back to this. Managed to sort the problem out with some filters and messing about. It was for a thing for work. I didn't think of doing it in flash. Silly me, would of made much more sense.

    Thanks guys
