Thumbs up Hello from a Greek Geek!

Hello people!

Sebastian here, 20 years old, coming from Greece and studying Computer Science in London.

Web Dev has been a "craft" I was always interested in but as a procrastinator that respects himself since now I have been spending my time mainly saying "OK, I am going to learn HTML/CSS/JS this holiday". I read one or two tutorials and then I give up. However, I am really willing to make it happen by the end of the summer as I can't afford having ideas about project and always lacking the skills. My course at uni helped by "forcing" me to learn the basics of HTML, CSS, JS, PHP and SQL so I am confindent. (I am only affraid about and not interested at all in graphics, is that a huge problem for web developer wannabes?)

The coffee bit in the slogan of this site persuaded me I should join this community. And maybe teach you how to make Greek coffee...

Until then I guess I can do with French!

You don't have to be a designer to be a web developer, I cannot design at all, the skill set for a developer can be very different from a designer, many different languages and lots of determination make a developer.. it can range from marketing to search engine optimisation ( seo ) to coding itself, most people find they have some form of ability in at least one of these areas, some are lucky enough to have more than one. When it comes to getting a job, become proficient enough in just one of these skills and the world is your oyster.

You wont learn these things over night and you wont know everything when you finish uni, but over time these skills will grow as you learn more, we are just here to give you that extra shove in the right direction, give you advice and answer your questions directly.. welcome to wpc

Yep, you don't need to be a web designer to be a web developer.

Speaking of SEO-ists, Glynn, I've never really gotten the point of them. In my opinion, any web developer worth his salts should be able to make good SEO. Why do you need somebody seperate to do the job?

As other's have said, to be a web developer you do not require any design skills.

I would strongly suggest that you read a lot of a industry blogs and articles. There really isn't a proper web development curriculum and a friend who recently did a computer science course was a taught a lot of out of date techniques. In his first year he was marked down for creating a div/css layout in HTML instead of a table based layout...

Anyway, good luck with it :)

Hello again, thanks for the warm welcome!

My main concern is that I will always be dependent from graphic artists as I cannot even design a simple logo.

That's an issue that is solved if I find one that I can work well with but I am not sure about how easy that is.

Anyways, I guess that's a concern I should worry about more when I am ok with my web dev skills and that will take some time. :)

Welcome to the Cafe, I look forward to hearing how to make Greek coffee.

The best I have had so far is traditional Ethiopian, and that was lush.

As a developer you get to get your hands dirty and make the site work fantastically, as a designer you get to make it look pretty, so both have entirely different skill sets.

However, it is worth learning how to make basic images (buttons, etc), as at some point you will need to.

I look forward to seeing you around the forums.

hey sebkom

welcome to webprocafe

i too am not great on the graphic design side of things. thankfully my wife takes care of that side of things. maybe when u r looking for a girlfriend u could check out their graphic design skills!!

truth is with the way the web is now you can easily outsource that side of your designing to freelance graphic artists and concentrate on what u r good at.

good luck

Hahaha! I guess the reason it didn't work out well with my ex was that she was having a hard time to even browse the web then... :D

Once again, thanks for the warm welcome!
