check out this one Stu Nicholls | CSSplay | CSS Light Box would be the perfect backup for those that dont have javascript enabled.... if it can be integrated to work if javascript is not enabled

That's pretty impressive. I didn't even know CSS could handle clicks.

to be honest, neither did I, but I am intrigued to find out what element is causing the effect

You need to remember that this isn't supported within Internet Explorer , so if a high proportion of your user base use this (check your stats) then you will need to find another method.
