Simple, being good at what you do. It doesn't matter whether you are solo or part of larger team, you will only get more work if you deliver quality.

In terms of whether you go solo or team up will depend on your skill set, the availability of work and your goals / ambitions.

If you want to work on projects for clients then, wherever your skills currently sit, I would look to build up your work and reputation as a sole entity and when you have enough work you can look around to bring someone on board to help you out - whether that is taking some of the admin off your hands or helping you with design / development.

If you want to work on your own stuff but only have skills in one area, then you can look to team up with someone and use each others skills to produce something that you can sell. Communities such as CollabFinder - Find Great Programmer, Designer, and Artist Collaborators for Your Next Big Project facilitate this type of hookup.

Best of luck, but don't forget the quality!
