Default Addon Domains

Quick question chaps,

GOt a client who has 3 domains and wants all 3 pointing to their website. The main domain is already in place but they want the others activated.

My concern, before setting up the DNS is if all 3 domains point to the same content will they all be penalised for serving duplicate content (or triplicate in this case)?

Would I be better doing a 301 from the two addon domains to the main one?

Cheers!

Hi Frinkky,

I am lead to believe the answer is yes, you will get penalised for duplicate content if it's not a 301 redirect:

Duplicate content - Webmasters/Site owners Help

Quote:
In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results.
Quote:
There are some steps you can take to proactively address duplicate content issues, and ensure that visitors see the content you want them to.
Use 301s: If you've restructured your site, use 301 redirects ("RedirectPermanent") in your .htaccess file to smartly redirect users, Googlebot, and other spiders. (In Apache, you can do this with an .htaccess file; in IIS, you can do this through the administrative console.)
However, can I hijack your post and ask a related question...

Does adding a domain as a 'domain alias' result in penalising, as I'm not 100% sure how that process redirects the alias domains to the main domain!

Hijack away :D and thanks - I figured 301's were the way to go, just wanted some confirmation.

Hi,

Gonna hi-jack you again!

I've been doing a little research and I'm lead to believe that having 'domain aliases' in Plesk will cause Google to think that you have duplicate content... and that's not a good thing!

So 301's are definitely the way to go rather than a domain alias.

However, I have 14 "extra" domains for a client and they want to point all of those to the one main domain. Is there a quick way of doing this on a DNS level or anything? As creating the 14 more domains in Plesk just to 301 them to the main domain seems a little bit of a waste of space and time! lol

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Stu
