Default Installing Apache Web Server on your home PC

Wow, This is a friends quote from his own forums that i found and thought might be quite useful to members here.

Quote:
Did you know that this is even possible? because there are people that think it is not or that it is really hard to do, well here i will try to show you just how easy it is.

Then once it is installed you can even install vBulletin into it and modify it to your hearts content, this is the way i test things out and design styles etc for the vBulletin forums system.

Step One:
Download all the files you need in just one file from HERE and save it to somewhere on your computer lets say in a folder called temp.

Step Two:
The downloaded file is 16.2megs and should be in your temp folder, go to that folder and double click on the file WampServer2.0g-1.exe to install it.

Step Three:
Once install is complete the program adds a folder to your system C: drive called wamp which contains all the programs and files needed to run it, now you will see in the bottom right of your taskbar a little icon has been added to the menu called WAMPSERVER.

Step Four:
Now if you can see that icon it means the server is installed right, and you can now test it by opening your fav browser and putting http://localhost into the url bar.

If you see the default server page all is done and you are ready, now the folder that contains that page and all your HTML/PHP files is inside the wamp folder on C:wamp/www

I will leave it at this stage and see if anyone has any problems with it.

i intend to show you how to install vbulletin in there soon!.
This came from webdosser.com and is a friend of mine who i'm in buisness with. He gave me permission to copy/paste this into this forum.

If you want to check with him then just go over and ask him he will verify that i have permission ok.

Once he has posted the installation guide i will copy that to this thread also.

Oh by the way hes into "Server Managment" and said this is secure once done correctly. If you have installed it go take a look its amazing.

Yeah, most of use develop in php so wamp or xampp is used by many of us here.

We even wrote about it over in our resources forum: http://webprocafe.com/website-develo...1-wamp-it.html (WAMP it...)

I knew it could be done i just didn't realise it was so easy to do. Its great really. Also does it depend on your connection as in internet speeds? If it does then thats good coz i have Virgin 50meg installed which is cable...

Nope, it's installed on your local machine/drive, so you can work away without an internet connection.

You only need a net connection when you want to promote your changes to production.

Ok, So if i wanted to give out the link for it can i? Also would there be risks in that? Or can you actually run a forums from your own PC (Hosting) i don't want to do it i'm just curious no know...

Last but not least. Can i take the localhost link out and replace it with a regular domain name? I have 2 spare domain names i'm not using and just wondered if they could be attached to this test forum?

Thanks and i hope you know what i'm going on about...

It is possible, I just dont have a clue of how to achieve it. There is plenty of people running test sites from home.

I have done it, its pretty easy, but there are several things you have to be aware of

firstly your isp will probably frown on the amount of traffic you will probably get ( bandwidth usage ) so, you would need a business account at the cost of around £200 - £400 per month

secondly, you need to know about dns, firewall setup and apache and mysql maintenance.. you would need a static ip from your isp and point your domain to it

third is your electricity bill, you will need to keep your pc on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.. can you afford it ?

I set it up, yes, but I put the site online for a couple of days then deleted it, just to see if I could do it, but to do it properly, the costs are far more than using a host, even with a managed dedicated server.

For those Mac users out there, MAMP is awesome.

Some those more experienced with computers and server management may want to install Apache, MySQL, and PHP directly. That way you don't have to deal with the CP software that comes with XAMPP, MAMP, etc, and all the software packages are installed in their native locations, making it easier to configure them. That's what I do on my linux box, and I've had much less trouble from that than from XAMPP.
