Default Opera: Mobile web use rising globally

New figures have suggested that use of the mobile web is continuing to grow worldwide.

According to usage figures for Opera's Mini browser for mobile devices, over 23 million people used the app to browse the mobile internet in March - representing a 157 per cent year-on-year increase.

Page views with Opera Mini have also soared by 255 per cent over the same period.

In total, 148 million MB of web data was served via the browser in March, a figure that would have approached the 1.4 petabyte mark if the data was uncompressed.

Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive of Opera, predicted that the mobile phone will soon become the main way in which most people access the web.

"As millions of people each month discover the web through Opera Mini, content providers have an incredible opportunity to seize competitive advantage in this new medium," he commented.

Vinton Cerf, one of the founders of the internet and chief internet evangelist at Google, said at a recent web conference in Spain that he believes it is likely more people will soon have their first online experience on the mobile web than on laptops, AFP reports.

So what are you thoughts. Is this trend finally about go main stream and we should all learn the skills of designing & developing for the mobile web?

I think that we would still use the web via our computers even though mobile web is on the rise. Technically, not everyone's phone has the capability to browse the internet like the iPhone, or other mobile web browsers.

Web designing & developing also will still be made on the internet, but some/most will try to expand their experience by starting designs for mobile web browsing.

I never really saw the interest in going on the internet on your mobile phone... Always seemed like a big waste of money to me; I'm surprised the numbers have risen so steeply.
I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that mobile phones will soon be the primary source of access to the internet - I mean, it's too awkward and fiddly - it's okay if you think "Oh, I quickly need to IM someone" or "I quickly need to Google something", but other than that, I don't think that using a mobile phone would be very accomadating (I mean - imagine trying to type out all of what I've just said on a mobile).

On the other hand - though, I've been seeing a lot of "Mobile browsers" being advertised recently..
